University of Colorado - Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences
2501 Kittredge Loop Road, Boulder, CO 80309
The department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences is within the College of Arts and Sciences. Undergraduate majors in SLHS obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, which includes a strong foundation of courses in the liberal arts. Courses at the undergraduate level are designed to introduce students to basic processes of communication, speech, language, and hearing, and to disorders of communication. Undergraduate students may also complete the Speech Pathology Assistant Program, which will allow them to work as an assistant to a speech pathologist in the public schools.

Students can pursue graduate degrees in areas such as speech and language pathology, diagnostic and rehabilitative audiology, speech and language acquisition, augmentative and alternative communication, speech and hearing physiology, psychoacoustics, bioacoustics, and neuroscience. As professionals and behavioral scientists, students study the receptive and productive aspects of normal and pathological communication. Clinical education programs in speech pathology and audiology lead to professional credentials, the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC), by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Both the Master’s Speech Language Pathology and the Au.D. programs are fully accredited.

Graduate degree options include:

  • Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology leading to ASHA CCC Certification. Students may or may not hold an undergraduate degree in speech and hearing.
  • Master’s degree in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, non-clinical program. Students who do not wish to pursue ASHA certification can obtain a master’s degree by designing their own program.
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in any area of study within speech, language and hearing sciences.
  • Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree leading to ASHA certification.
  • Dual Au.D.-Ph.D. degrees in audiology.
  • Ph.D. in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences with a Joint Ph.D. in Neuroscience.
  • Ph.D. in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences with a graduate certificate or dual Ph.D. in Cognitive Science .

University of Northern Colorado - Audiology and Speech-Language Sciences
Gunter 1400, Greeley, CO 80639
The Audiology and Speech-Language Sciences Department at the University of Northern Colorado offers educational programs in speech-language pathology and audiology, both with a clinical orientation. As part of the training program, the department also houses the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Clinic, which provides a variety of diagnostic and rehabilitative services to individuals of any age with speech, language, and/or hearing difficulties. The program is accredited by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) and by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The undergraduate program offers a pre-professional bachelor’s degree in speech-language pathology and audiology. At the graduate level, both the speech and audiology programs are designed to prepare students to become professional practitioners in their field. Training focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of speech, language, hearing, and balance disorders in both children and adults.

Audiology and Speech-Language Sciences Department programs of study:

  • Audiology Au.D - this certifying clinical doctoral degree program in audiology (Au.D.) is fully accredited and provides excellent academic, research, and clinical preparation.
  • Speech-Language Pathology M.A - fully accredited program
  • Audiology and Speech-Language Sciences B.S. - in this comprehensive pre-professional program, students take academic courses and observe and participate in supervised clinical practica. These activities are designed to provide a strong base for entry into a professional certifying degree program at the master's degree level in Speech-Language Pathology or at the doctoral degree level in Audiology. This degree program does not lead to certification of any type. Students cannot find professional employment within Colorado and most other states with only the bachelor's degree in Audiology and Speech-Language Sciences. The degree program can be modified to serve as an excellent undergraduate foundation for entry into the master's degree program in Severe Needs: Hearing (Deaf Education).
  • Speech-Language Pathology (Online Program) M.A. - this three-year program is designed to prepare students for entry-level activity as speech-language pathologists. It was developed to meet the needs of non-traditional students with employment or family commitments that preclude participating in a full-time on-campus program, who wish to earn a master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Students must have completed an undergraduate program in Audiology and Speech-Language Sciences, or Communication Disorders prior to beginning the master's degree program. During the program, students use e-mail, video and audiotape, web-based instruction, compressed videos, audio conferencing and other technologies to participate in academic classes and clinical seminars. On-campus class meetings are required for two to three weeks during the first summer of the program and a full-time, 12-week internship in a medical setting is required during the final summer of the program. Clinical practicum courses are completed through a partnership between university faculty and a clinical supervisor at each student's place of employment. Once admitted to the program, students must maintain employment as a speech-language pathologist or Speech-Language Sciences aide at a site where they can obtain their clinical hours under the supervision of an ASHA certified Speech-Language Pathologist. Upon completion, graduates are eligible to take the National Examination in Speech-Language Sciences (NESPA) and to complete the Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) required by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) for the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC). Graduates are also eligible for the licensure and certification through the Departments of Education in most states.

The Online Speech-Language Pathology M.A. program is accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the Board of Examiners in Speech-Language Sciences and Audiology (ASHA) and by the Colorado Department of Education. Certified speech-language pathologists find employment in the public schools, private practice, hospitals, rehabilitation facilities and freestanding clinics.
